How to Have a Sustainable Wedding on a Budget.

We love weddings at Eventsured, the bigger the celebration the better, but we must admit that they can be pretty wasteful at times. The excess food, the leftover flowers, the decorations that you throw away after, and even the jewelry you buy for the wedding can all have an effect on the environment.

The Green Bride Guide: How to Create an Earth-Friendly Wedding on Any Budget states that the average wedding produces 400 lbs of garbage and 63 tons of CO2. With an estimated 2.5 million weddings per year, that is about 1 billion lbs of trash and as many emissions as approximately 4 people would produce in a year, in just a single day. That’s a crazy amount of waste, but with a few easy budget-friendly changes you can have the wedding of your dreams without having to feel any guilt about the impact on the environment.

Buy Ethical Wedding Rings

Before the wedding, you have to think about are your ring choices. Diamond mining uses diesel fuel, electricity, and hydrocarbons that all release harmful toxins into the air and are dangerous to the environment. Lab-grown diamonds are cheaper, just as beautiful, and leave a smaller impact on the environment. You can also reuse precious family jewelry or check out a thrift store to see what kind of gems you can find.

Choose Your Location Wisely

Destination weddings are amazing but that does mean a lot of air travel. Changing your wedding venue to be closer to home is an easy and affordable way to cut down on airplane and car emissions. However, we want everyone to have the wedding of their dreams so if you are hard set on having a destination wedding, you can instead opt for an outdoor space. Outdoor spaces like national parks, beaches, or vineyards are amazing venues that don’t require the same amount of energy used as a venue inside. Most outside venues also have built-in decor which cuts down on decoration waste as well.

Keep the Wedding List Small

This may seem like an obvious solution but try and keep your wedding small. This is the easiest and most effective way to have a budget/eco-friendly wedding. We know it’s tempting to have a giant party and invite everyone you know but the fewer people you invite the less waste you will produce. However, this is not a make it or break it decision. If you’re really struggling with cutting down your guest list, try out the other suggestions for a sustainable big wedding.

Give out Reusable Wedding Favors

Wedding favors are always nice to give out and receive, but guests can easily forget about them or throw them away in time. The best type of wedding favor is a reusable one!  A little potted plant or a seed packet are wonderful favors that guests can continue to use. Even if your guests forget to take them home, you never have to throw away plant or seed packets. You can plant them yourself and have a wonderful reminder of your wedding.

These are just a few of the many small changes you can make to reduce waste and have the guilt-free wedding of your dreams. Sustainable choices don’t always have to be hard or expensive and just making one can impact the environment.
